Your local,
properly

Roy's is the third room and the least formal of them, a Riviera-centre local in Sorrento where the pizzas come in large or jumbo, the Fettuccine Roy's has its own following, and nobody minds how long you stay.

Bring your own wine. Order the lamb shoulder ragu that has been going eight hours, or the jumbo marinara the table will not finish. The pasta, the bread, the sauces and the desserts are all made by hand, same as every Gemelli. Let the kids have the calamari and finish with the Nutella bomba. Banquets if you are bringing the whole crowd. Dinner runs seven nights; lunch Friday through Sunday.

About the room

Roy's by Gemelli Sorrento: Italian restaurant and pizzeria, Gold Coast

Cucina e pizza popolare. The neighbourhood one in the Riviera centre, BYO every night.

Roy's was the third restaurant in the family, and we couldn't resist opening it in Sorrento. It sits tucked away on Campbell Street in the Riviera Shopping Centre, on the corner of Campbell and Panitz, and it's deliberately a different kind of room to Broadbeach: homestyle, comforting, relaxed, the place for a Tuesday-night family dinner as much as a Saturday. We took the classic Gemelli menu and reworked it with our Italo-Australian roots, which is why you'll find a Hawaiian and a Meat Lovers next to the ragu.

Pizza comes in two sizes: large at 13 inches and jumbo at 18. The Toppa is a simple tomato, garlic and herb crust; the Roy's Special is prosciutto, rocket and parmesan; there's a Calabrese with sausage and roasted capsicum, a BBQ Pollo, a Marinara with prawns and calamari, and two white-base pizzas, the Funghi with truffle oil and the Primavera with prawns and zucchini. A gluten-free base is available on the large.

Pasta is made in-house. The rigatoni ragu is an eight-hour lamb shoulder ragu in crushed tomatoes; alongside it are a Norma, an amatriciana, a bolognese of veal and pork mince, fettuccine marinara, the Fettuccine Roy's with prawns, chicken and avocado, and gnocchi with pesto or gorgonzola. Gluten-free rigatoni and gnocchi are available. Ask about the chef's specials. They change daily and they're on the board.

Starters are the ones you'd expect from us: polpette of veal and pork with housemade bread, an antipasto for two, Byron Bay burrata, calamari fritti, truffled mushroom arancini, mussels in white wine and chilli. Mains run to a 300g scotch fillet, lamb cutlets with garlic and rosemary, scaloppine funghi, chicken and veal cotoletta, a pollo saltimbocca and the fish of the day.

The room itself is vibrant and mood-lit, and it suits whatever you're there for: a date night, a casual dinner with friends over vino and pizza, the kids on a school night, a table of twenty for a birthday. Roy's is about community, family, fun and friendly service, and it's the one of ours that most people in Sorrento treat as their local.

Roy's is BYO wine every night, for when the bottle you've been saving at home deserves a proper plate of pasta. The bar also does the Italian classics, Negroni, Aperol and Campari spritz, Rossini, and its own list: the Roy Boy, a Sicilian Margarita, the Carina. Alcohol-free there's the Sorrento Bliss and a virgin mojito.

Dessert is tiramisu, crème brûlée, gnocchetti, a Nutella bomba, pannacotta, cannoli and gelato. Kids ten and under have their own menu: margherita, pasta, cotoletta or calamari.

Hours are dinner Monday to Wednesday 5 till 8, Thursday 5 till 8.30, and on Friday, Saturday and Sunday both lunch, 12 till 2.30, and dinner, 5 till 8.30 (8 on Sunday). Groups of fifteen or more dine on a banchetto of pizza, pasta, salad and dolci, with antipasti if you want to start big. The reservations team is on roys@gemelliitalian.com.au or (07) 5538 9130, 10am to 4pm Monday to Friday. Takeaway is online for pickup or on Uber Eats.
