Where it
all started
One room on the highway in 2013, opened by three brothers barely out of their teens who had been making sauce with the family since before they could read. It has been full most nights since.
Pasta rolled each morning from 00 flour and free-range eggs. A rigatoni ragu of oxtail and pork shin that goes eight hours. Pizza from a tiled oven that has never really cooled down. The bread, the sauces, the gelato and the desserts all come out of our own kitchen. Nothing on the menu is bought in. The wine list carries Gourmet Traveller Wine's “One Glass”, and the gelato is ours. Sunday lunch runs long. Bring the famiglia.

About the room
Gemelli Italian Broadbeach: Italian restaurant, Gold Coast
The first room, since 2013. What we cook, how we seat you, and what it costs.
Gemelli Italian opened at 2/2685 Gold Coast Highway in 2013. It was our first restaurant and it is still the one the others get measured against. "Gemelli" is Italian for twins, that's James and Alec, and with our older brother Paul it's a family restaurant in the plain sense of the words. We grew up with sauce days and salami days with Nonno, and the menu here is the food we eat at home, cooked with mostly imported Italian product and the seafood and meat that being in Queensland gives us access to.
Start with the pasta, because that's where the work is. Every shape is made in-house each morning from 00 flour and free-range eggs. The rigatoni ragu is an eight-hour slow-cooked oxtail and pork shin ragu in crushed San Marzano tomatoes. The ravioli della casa are filled with spinach and ricotta. The spaghetti pescatora carries local prawns and Queensland spanner crab; the vongole has clams, prawns and zucchini flowers. Any rigatoni dish swaps to gluten free.
Before the pasta there's the salumi board: Prosciutto di Parma, capocollo, inferno salame, mortadella, buffalo mozzarella from Campania and a Lombardy gorgonzola, as a small or large mixed plate. Antipasti run from Mt Tamborine burrata with San Daniele prosciutto to an SA octopus salad, Riverina beef carpaccio and grilled Queensland calamari with chilli oil. For secondi: a 350g scotch fillet, milk-fed veal saltimbocca wrapped in 24-month Prosciutto di Parma, the misto di mare, and whatever fish came in that day.
The wine list carries Gourmet Traveller Wine's "One Glass" award. It's a mix of imported Italian and local Australian. By the glass it runs from a Specchio Prosecco through a Tornatore Etna Bianco to Marcarini's Lasarin, and bottles like Taittinger and Pieropan's Calvarino Soave. Cocktails are the Italian classics, Negroni, Aperol Spritz and Bellini, plus our own: the Silvio Sour, the Smoked Fig Old Fashioned. On tap there's Birra Moretti and the Birra Rolando Italian pale ale.
Dessert is tiramisu, pistachio semifreddo, cannoli, a chocolate budino, and gelati made by the family at Gelato Gemelli. There's a Sgroppino and a tiramisu cocktail if you'd rather drink it, and the digestivi are all there: limoncello, Montenegro, Averna, Fernet. Kids ten and under have their own menu: rigatoni Napoli, spaghetti con polpette, cotoletta, calamari.
Hours are lunch Thursday to Sunday from 12 till 3, and dinner every night from 5pm, till 9 Monday to Wednesday and 9.30 Thursday to Sunday. So that everyone gets a table, dinner runs on sittings: tables of two have 90 minutes; the 5pm sitting is 5 to 6.30; the 6pm, 6.15 and 6.30 sittings are two hours; from 8pm onwards there's no time limit. If you don't want a clock on the table, book from 8pm.
Groups of twelve or more dine on a set menu, served sharing style across primi, secondi and dessert, with a two-hour drinks package available alongside it. Our reservations team is on broadbeach@gemelliitalian.com.au or (07) 5504 7413 between 10am and 4pm, Monday to Friday.
Takeaway is from the same kitchen. Order online for pickup or find us on Uber Eats. Digital gift cards are sold per venue.
