The little
twin

Gemellini opened in 2016 as the little brother of Broadbeach. The second room, and the one that feels most like somebody's kitchen: small, loud in the best way, and full most nights.

Start with burrata and the mushroom arancini, share a Bella Donna from the woodfired oven, then the lamb shoulder ragu that has been going eight hours. The wine list is Italian producers we actually drink, from the hills of Barolo to the volcanic slopes of Etna. The pasta is made by hand, the pizzas are cooked with fire, and the table is meant to be shared. That is all Gemellini has ever been about.

About the room

Gemellini Nobby Beach: Italian restaurant and pizzeria, Gold Coast

The little twin. A trattoria and pizzeria at 2247 Gold Coast Highway, since 2016.

Gemellini opened in 2016 at 2247 Gold Coast Highway, Nobby Beach, as the baby brother to Gemelli in Broadbeach. The idea was simple: bring the same cooking to the southern end of the Gold Coast in a smaller, louder, more casual room, and build the menu for sharing. It's a trattoria and a pizzeria, mood-lit and intimate, and it's the one of ours you walk to from the beach.

The pizza oven was imported from Italy and does most of the heavy lifting. Pizze rosse are on San Marzano tomato: the Margherita, a Diavola with Calabrian chilli, the Bella Donna with hot salami, burrata and hot 'nduja, the Sant'Anna with Messina black anchovies, a Rucola with 24-month Prosciutto di Parma. Pizze bianche include a garlic pizza with Sicilian sea salt, a Salsiccia with broccolini and our fennel-pork sausage, and a Quattro Formaggi. There are three vegan pizze with dairy-free mozzarella. Gluten-free bases are available.

Pasta is made fresh every day. The rigatoni ragu here is an eight-hour lamb shoulder ragu. There's an amatriciana, a carbonara with pancetta and egg yolk, spaghetti ai gamberi with Sicilian chilli, handmade ricotta-and-spinach ravioli, gnocchi al forno baked in the woodfired oven, and two egg-free pastas, the rigatoni Norma and the rigatoni zucca, so vegans aren't stuck with a salad. Gluten-free pasta is available.

To start: gnocco fritto with pecorino and prosciutto, warm Ligurian olives with housemade pickles, pane pomodoro on Pugliese focaccia. Antipasti include a crudo of Mooloolaba yellowfin tuna, Byron Bay burrata with marinated cherry tomatoes and basil pesto, garlic prawns, and cozze, spicy NZ black mussels with 'nduja. Secondi are the Roman-style chargrilled lamb cutlets (agnello scottadito), a 300g scotch fillet, veal saltimbocca, melanzane alla parmigiana, and the fish of the day from the blackboard.

The wine list is hand-picked with a strong lean on indigenous Italian varietals from north to south, and it has featured in Gourmet Traveller Wine's "Wine List of the Year" awards more than once. By the glass runs from a Tamellini Soave and a Tornatore Etna Bianco to Toscolo Chianti; bottles include Pol Roger, Girolamo Russo's Nerina from Etna, Cervaro della Sala and an amber wine from Athletes of Wine. The bar does a barrel-aged Negroni, a Palermo Old Fashioned and the Silvio Sour, and the alcohol-free list has a strawberry spritz and the Nobbys Bliss.

Dessert is tiramisu, a cookie bomba, pistachio semifreddo, cannoli, gnocchetti and gelati from Gelato Gemelli, which is a few doors down the highway. Kids ten and under get a kids pizza, rigatoni Napoli, rigatoni burro, cotoletta or calamari.

Dinner is every night from 5 till 9pm; lunch is Sundays only, 12 till 2.30. Groups of twelve or more dine on the banquet: antipasti, pizza, pasta and salads, with secondi and sides if you want the full spread. The reservations team is on gemellini@gemelliitalian.com.au or (07) 5575 1418, 10am to 4pm Monday to Friday. Takeaway is online for pickup or on Uber Eats.
